Amber Extreme Weather Warning

The Met Office has extended an amber extreme heat warning for Sunday 17 July, Monday 18 July and Tuesday 19 July, as temperatures will build this weekend and early next week for much of England and Wales.

The amber warning highlights likely adverse health effects for the public, not just limited to those most vulnerable to extreme heat.

Temperatures could be in excess of 35°C in the southeast, and more widely around 32°C within the warning area, with Monday and Tuesday most likely to see temperatures around this level.

There is clear government guidance on looking after children and those in educational settings during heatwaves, including the use of ventilation, keeping children hydrated, and avoiding vigorous physical activity, encouraging children to wear loose clothing, sunhats, to use sunscreen, and providing them with plenty of water. Please help us with this.

Children should attend school as usual – schools will not be closed. At Bracken Leas we will be applying all of these measures to help everyone. We are in school mindful that there is very little shade outside and so time outside may be restricted at lunch. Children should come to school in basic uniform and leave jumpers at home. Summer dresses are encouraged or shorts (black PE shorts could be worn if children don’t have tailored shorts).

All staff will be briefed on Heat Stress, Heat Stroke and Heat Exhaustion including symptoms and remedial actions to take.

Thank you as always for your understanding.

School Games Award – Gold Award

We are proud to announce that we have been awarded the School Games Gold Award for 2021-22. This is due to the incredible commitment from Miss Howarth, Mrs Shannon and all the teachers and staff at Bracken Leas.

Summer Reading Challenge

Don’t forget to sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge at Brackley Library where your child will be challenged to read six library books of their choice over the summer holidays.  The theme this year is Gadgeteers focusing on inventions and creativity so plenty of events will be running, including a magic show, crafts, a treasure hunt and lots of other fun things!

All of this runs free of charge and your child will collect stickers along the way and then get a certificate and a medal at the end which they can bring in to school to show in September.  If you’re not already members of the library, it’s free, quick, and easy to join.  There’s even a Summer Six challenge for grown-ups to take part in too if they want to where you can be entered into a prize draw to win a £20 book voucher.  Plus, our school will win a trophy if we have the highest percentage of finishers in the local area so take part to help us show what a fantastic school of readers and Gadgeteers we are!
